Catalogue of Staffordshire Figures by Wood and Caldwell

The following is an initial list of known Wood & Caldwell figures, made between 1790 and 1818 (but not figures of famous people).  This information is derived from books, auction records, museums and from actual examples in private collections.  Where there are thumbnail pictures, please click on these for more information.  If you can add any information to the following list, or provide further photographs, please contact me jj@jjhc.info

Figure of Britannia, holding a spear, her shield on her left, a lion on her right.  The helmet cuirasse and shield lustred in silver on a rock mound base applied with flowers.  Peal glazed earthenware with overglaze enamel and silver lustre painted decoration.  Impressed on the back "WOOD & CALDWELL", incised "Burslem". Height 24.4cm.

Figure of St. George and the Dragon.  St George seated astride a black dappled horse wearing a gilded helmet and blue wrap, holding a gilded shield and metal spear a recumbent green Dragon at their feet; all on green rockwork bases enriched with large colourful flower heads.  Peal glazed earthenware with overglaze enamel and silver lustre painted decoration.  Impressed mark "WOOD & CALDWELL", reverse incised "Burslem" in white cartouche.  Height 21.5cm or 24.5cm.

Figure of a lion, recumbent.  These were produced as a pair (mirror image).  Pearl glazed earthenware with overglaze enamel painted decoration.  Colour picked out in brown and iron red, the rectangular base with ochre line bands    Impressed mark on bottom "WOOD & CALDWELL".  Height 10.5cm, length 12.5cm.  Image on page 166 of "English Earthenware Figures", by Pat Halfpenny, published 1991.

Candle stick, figure of a Triton.  Seated on a rocky outcrop holding a cornucopia, bronze glaze. Impressed mark "WOOD & CALDWELL".  Height 24cm.

Figure of a boy, sitting on a tree stump, holding a cup.  Creamware with overglaze enamel painted decoration.  The cup has no bottom and so could be a holder for something?  Mounted on a square plinth base, impressed "WOOD & CALDWELL".  Height 21cm.  This figure can also be found in a bronze glaze.

Figure of a boy, sitting on a tree stump, reading a book.  Creamware with overglaze enamel painted decoration.  Mounted on a square plinth base, impressed "WOOD & CALDWELL".  Height 18cm.  This model can also be found in silver lustre.

Figure of Falstaff.  Pearlware.  Finely modelled as a bearded corpulent figure wearing a plumed hat, lilac jacket, red breeches and a lace ruff, clasping a sword and shield, standing on `C' scroll oval base raised on square foot.  Impressed mark "WOOD & CALDWELL".  Height 23cm.

Figure of Cobbler.  Pearlware. One of a pair, Cobbler and his Wife. These figures are not marked but are definitely Wood and Caldwell as they have such a similarity to the Figure of Youth (which is marked).  In fact the pink colour paint around the bases is so similar that it could almost have come out of the same paint pot.  The Cobbler is 155mm tall, weight 390gm.  The base is 76x76mm.

Figure of Cobbler's Wife.  Pearlware. One of a pair, Cobbler and his Wife. These figures are not marked but are definitely Wood and Caldwell as they have such a similarity to the Figure of Youth (which is marked).  In fact the pink colour paint around the bases is so similar that it could almost have come out of the same paint pot.  The Cobbler's Wife is 145mm, weight 390gm.  The base is 76x76mm.

Figure of Madonna and Child.  This example is taken from the Potteries Museum and Art Gallery website and is described "1790-1810 Pearlware over-glaze painted figure.  Height 34 cm.  This figure of a Madonna and child was modelled after a terracotta figure by Lucas Faye d'Herbe now in the British Museum." I understand it is impressed WOOD & CALDWELL".

Figure of Prudence.  This example is taken from the Potteries Museum and Art Gallery website and is described "1790-1810 Pearlware over-glaze painted figure.  Height 53 cm".

Pair of figures, cow and horse.  A pair of enamelled pearlware spill vase Figures of a cow and horse, each standing four-square before a tree stump vase, each upon rounded rectangular bases with applied flower heads foliage and mosswork.  Naturalistically coloured, the horse dappled grey, the cow brown and white.  Impressed mark "WOOD & CALDWELL" a larger "Burslem".  Heights 31.7cm and 34.3cm.  Known from an auction record.

Figure of a greyhound, recumbent.  Impressed mark. 16.6cm Height 16.6cm.  Known from an auction record.
