Catalogue of Staffordshire Figures and Busts of Famous People
Made by Wood and Caldwell

The following is an initial list of known Wood & Caldwell figures and busts representing famous people (but not fictional people).  These were made between 1790 and 1818.  This information is derived from books, auction records, museums and from actual examples in private collections.  Where there are thumbnail pictures, please click on these for more information.  If you can add any information to the following list, or provide further photographs, please contact me jj@jjhc.info

 

Figures and Bust of Famous People

Bust of Alexander I of Russia, half-length, wearing full military uniform, his head turned slightly to the left.  Impressed on the reverse "Alexander Aet. 35 Moscow Burnt Europe Preserved 1812".  Impressed mark "WOOD & CALDWELL", "Burslem".   Dark brown colour with a pale face.  Height 30.5cm.  This model also exists Painted all over in black enamel, on waisted socle base. .  Mentioned on page 167 of "English Earthenware Figures", by Pat Halfpenny, published 1991.

Bust of Nelson,  bronze glazed earthenware.  Impressed mark "WOOD & CALDWELL".  Height 21.5cm?

Bust of Duke of Wellington, pearlware with overglaze enamel painted decoration.  Impressed "WOOD & CALDWELL".  Height 56cm.

Bust of the Rev John Wesley (1703-1791).  Noted as by WOOD & CALDWELL.  Height approximately 30cm.
Image on page 73 of "Staffordshire Portrait Figures" by John Hall, published 1972.
An example of this figure is also shown on the Potteries Museum and Art Gallery website.  It notes that Enoch Wood modelled the bust of Wesley after meeting him in 1781.  It was one of his most popular productions and was said to be the best likeness of Wesley.
