Figure of James Quinn as Falstaff
Impressed mark" WOOD & CALDWELL". Height 225mm
Pearlware. Finely modelled as a bearded corpulent figure wearing a plumed hat, lilac jacket, red breeches and a lace ruff, clasping a sword and shield, standing on `C' scroll oval base raised on square foot. Impressed mark "WOOD & CALDWELL". Height 23cm. There is also an image on page 166 of "English Earthenware Figures", by Pat Halfpenny, published 1991. This figure may have been copied from a Derby porcelain model, probably dating from the actor James Quinn's death in 1766. Originally after an undated mezzotint stated to be by and after J. McArdell. The Derby example is illustrated in Gordon Pugh Staffordshire Portrait Figures. Click on image for larger picture |
